Grades & Selection Guide

Grade Metallurgy Where It Excels When to Prefer Something Else
304/304L
Austenitic
General purpose, hygienic equipment, easy weldability
Chlorides >200 ppm → consider 316/316L
316/316L
Austenitic, Mo-bearing
Chloride/acidic media, marine duty, pharma/chemical
High hardness required → 410 or 17-4PH
410/420
Martensitic
Wear resistance, hardenable shafts, pump components
Aggressive corrosion → 316 or Duplex
17-4PH
Precipitation-hardening
Very high strength with good corrosion resistance
Continuous service >315 °C → consult for alternatives

Mechanical & Corrosion Behavior (Guidance)

  • Austenitic (304/316): Non-hardenable by heat treatment; work-hardens with cold finish. 316(L) preferred for chlorides/seawater.

  • Martensitic (410/420): Hardenable; balance hardness vs. toughness via tempering. Requires weld procedure controls.

  • 17-4PH: Achieves very high strength via age hardening (H900–H1150 conditions).

  • Duplex: Higher yield strength than austenitics and excellent SCC resistance; observe heat input control during welding.

For precise design allowables, use the relevant material standard or project specification.

Machining, Welding & Fabrication Notes

  • Machining: Use carbide tooling, generous coolant, and positive rake; bright/ground bars reduce setup time.

  • Work-hardening (austenitic): Avoid rubbing—cut decisively, optimize feed to stay ahead of work-hardening.

  • Welding: 304/316 weld readily; for 410/420 use matching or over-alloyed fillers and apply preheat/PWHT per WPS.

  • Heat Treatment:

    • 410/420: harden + temper to target hardness/toughness.

    • 17-4PH: solution treat + age per property class (e.g., H900/H1025).

  • Surface Integrity: Post-machining passivation can restore corrosion performance (especially for hygienic or marine service).

Quality Assurance & Testing

Each batch is validated to specification with traceable records:

  • PMI (chemical analysis) for grade verification

  • Ultrasonic (UT) and eddy current (ECT) for internal/surface discontinuities

  • Mechanical tests: tensile, hardness; impact when specified

  • Dimensional inspection: diameter, roundness, straightness, surface finish

  • Optional: intergranular corrosion (IGC), pitting potential, ferrite content (for duplex)

Supplied documents: EN 10204 3.1 MTC (heat chemistry, mechanicals, NDT); packing list; compliance statement to ordered standard.

Packing & Handling

  • Corrosion protection: VCI/anti-rust wrap, end caps on bright/polished bars

  • Unitization: strapped bundles on fumigated wooden pallets/crates

Marking: heat number, grade, size, finish, PO reference → full traceability
